1. Indianapolis Colts- Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
Luck is going to be the top pick no matter who's picking here and it looks like it's almost certainly going to be the Colts. Yes they have Peyton Manning, but you don't pass up on a once in a generation franchise QB if you have the opportunity to draft him. They could trade this pick for a king's ransom or they could draft Luck and sit him for a year or two behind Manning and then trade Peyton. It would be tough for Colts fans to see Manning traded, but they'll get over it. Just ask Green Bay fans how trading Favre worked out for them.
2. St. Louis Rams- Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
The Rams could go with Kalil, the OT from USC here. They have taken some OT's early recently and have whiffed on them so I don't think they will go that route. Mainly because they have a young QB who looks like he has a bright future and they need to get him a legit number one WR. Yes they traded for Brandon Lloyd and I think he resigns in St. Louis next year, but he's only had one good season and doesn't have the talent that Blackmon has.
3. Minnesota Vikings- Matt Kalil, OT, USC
There's a few reasons this pick makes sense. Kalil is the top player available. Offensive Tackle is a need in Minnesota. They have a rookie QB that also looks like he has a bright future and needs some protection. Adrian Peterson would like this pick as well because him will give him an elite Tackle that can open some holes in the run game.
4. Carolina Panthers- Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
The Panthers haven't been able to stop anyone this year. They've needed an upgrade at DE since Julius Peppers left for Chicago via free agency. They traded up a couple of years ago to take Everette Brown and he's been a bust. Coples is by far the best 4-3 DE in this draft.
5. Arizona Cardinals- Jonathon Martin, OT, Stanford
The Cardinals currently have a ton of money tied up at the OT position with two players that are overpaid and underachieve. Wisenhunt likes to play the old Steelers style of run the ball and play good defense football. Martin is a mauler in the run game and would help them play that style and allow the Cards to cut one of their overpaid Tackles.
6. Washington Redskins- Matt Barkley, QB, USC
If the Redskins are on the clock and one of the top three QB's are available there's no doubt they're taking one of them. Mike Shanahan is not going to watch another season of his team with Rex Grossman or John Beck at QB.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars- Alshon Jeffrey, WR, South Carolina
The Jags will be targeting either Coples or one of the top two WR's. This would be a good pick in the Jags fans mind. They took their franchise QB in the first round in this year's draft. Now they've got to get him someone who is a legit weapon at WR and Jeffrey is just that. He's just as talented as Blackmon and if he had better QB play in South Carolina may have been the first WR taken.
8. Miami Dolphins- Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
The Dolphins better be careful if they keep winning they may take themselves out of the running for one of the top QB's. This is a decent year for first round QB's and that's by far the biggest need in Miami as they're still looking for someone to replace Dan Marino.
9. Cleveland Browns- Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
Richardson is a beast and I would love for the Bengals to have a chance to draft him, but the Raiders keep winning so it doesn't look likely. Peyton Hillis isn't going to be back in Cleveland after the drama that has happened with him this year.
10. Seattle Seahawks- Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
This is a reach in my opinion, but we all saw what happened this year when there are multiple teams with a huge QB need they go early. The way Tannehill is flying up draft boards by the time draft day gets here it may not be considered a reach anymore. I don't see Pete Carroll standing pat with Jackson and Whitehurst at QB.
11. Kansas City Chiefs- Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Chiefs need to get some pass rush help across from Tamba Hali. Hali is great but is constantly seeing double teams with no one else on that defense posing a threat. The Chiefs defense has a lot of young pieces in place and adding Upshaw would give them a complete D with two studs coming off the edge bringing the pass rush.
12. Philadelphia Eagles- Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College
I can't believe the supposed "Dream Team" is picking this high and has a losing record. The Eagles could really use a CB, I can't believe that's true, but they won't draft one in the first round after spending all that money at the position. They've also been getting gashed up the middle and Kuechly is the type of player they need on that defense to be a leader and a force in the middle of that defense.
13. San Diego Chargers- Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
This is a steal at 13, but the CB class is so talented that teams with a need that pick early may pass at CB thinking they can land a talented player in the 2nd round at the position. The Chargers have needed to add CB depth since they traded Cromartie. Quinton Jammer will be 33 this season and is past his prime.
14. Buffalo Bills- Micheal Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
The Bills have one legit WR and that's Steve Johnson. Their offense was explosive at the beginning of the year but has stalled because teams are taking away Johnson and the only thing they can do is run a little. Floyd would give them another threat and would be one of the better number two WR's in the league.
15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
Aqib Talib may be in jail this time next year and Ronde Barber has to thinking about retiring. Dennard isn't the top CB left, but word is the Bucs really like Dennard according to walter football and they're usually right on these things.
16. Tennessee Titans- Mike Brewster, OC, Ohio State
Centers have been going higher and higher in the draft the past few years. Teams with great offensive lines all have good Centers. The Titans have needed a Center for the past year or so with the retirement of Kevin Mawae.
17. New York Jets- Alameda Ta'Amu, DT, Washington
Good Nose Tackles are hard to find. The Jets NT Kris Jenkins has basically been on IR the last three years. Ta'Amu will help the Jets become that dominant defense again that was impossible to run against.
18. Denver Broncos- Lamar Miller, RB, Miami
John Fox loves to run the ball and tried to over pay for Deangelo Williams. I don't think Fox is sold on Moreno and McGahee is too old to rely on. The Broncos will hope to land Richardson but he's too talented to last this far, they may trade up to get him though.
19. Chicago Bears- Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
The Bears need help all along that offensive line. It was only a matter of time until Cutler got injured. The Bears would likely be picking lower if they still had Cutler, but as we saw last weekend they are going to struggle without him, Forte can't do it all.
20. Cleveland Browns- Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
The Browns have two first round picks and they have to get at least one WR with one of these picks. The Browns will hope to land either Blackmon or Jeffrey, but as of now it doesn't look like they'll get either. Colt McCoy should be given another chance because no QB would be able to succeed with these WR's.
21. Houston Texans- Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
People drop Broyles because of his size, but he is one of the best WR's in college football. He can go up over bigger defenders. Broyles has the best hands of anyone in this draft, and likely better than most pros. He can get seperation and has good speed and quickness. Broyles would be a perfect compliment to Andre Johnson and finally give the Texans a legit number two WR threat.
22. Detroit Lions- Peter Konz, OC, Wisconsin
The Lions need to get someone competant to play the Center position. They have needed upgrades across the line for years and Stafford has been hurt every year before this year because of this.
23. Cincinnati Bengals- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
Jenkins may be the most talented CB in this draft and probably would've been a top ten pick if he didn't get arrested for weed. I'm sure the Bengals will hear all the jokes for taking someone with a record. I'm also sure these same talking heads and writers have also smoked pot sometime in their life.
We all see what's going on with Leon Hall out for the rest of the season. The pass defense is struggling. The Bengals definitely need to take advantage of this loaded CB class and not be caught next year with a lack of depth at CB. Jenkins and Hall will give the Bengals one of the best CB duos once again and if they can resign Clements and Jones will probably have the best one through four in the NFL.
24. Dallas Cowboys- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
Terrance Newman is getting old and losing some of that elite speed that made him a first round pick years ago. Mike Jenkins is afraid to tackle anyone. When these two were out at the beginning of the year the Cowboys secondary really struggled they need to add some youth and depth.
25. New York Giants- Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
The Giants are going to add to the list of having a duo of first round CB's. Early this year they had injuries at CB and had to play guys signed off the street basically. Look for them to add some depth in a division that has pass happy Dallas and Philadelphia.
26. Cincinnati Bengals- David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
If I have to watch Nate Livings start for this team one more season I'm gonna scream. He can't block anyone without getting at least one holding call a game. DeCastro is the best Guard in this class, and it's been a long time since the Bengals spent an early pick on an interior offensive lineman (Eric Steinbach).
I'm a believer in you have to be good up front to consistently win at any level of football from pee wee to the NFL. This pick would give the Bengals a complete offensive line. They had the Boling pick last year, which was a steal in my opinion and with Livings being awful and Bobbie Williams getting old they will have their Guards of the future in Boling and DeCastro and one of the best lines in the NFL. Add to that the good young skill players and Dalton and the Bengals will have one of the best offenses in the league for years to come.
27. Baltimore Ravens- Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State
Ray Lewis has been one of the best LB's in the history of the NFL and a mainstay in Baltimore for years. He can't play forever and the Ravens could draft his heir apparent next year. Burfict could play next to Lewis when the Ravens play a 3-4 and learn from him for a couple years.
28. New England Patriots- Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
The Patriots have to get some pass rushers in next year's draft, don't they? They've passed on some the past few years and have paid the price with a pass defense that can't stop anyone. This has to be the year they don't trade back and actually use their first round picks.
29. San Francisco 49ers- Mark Barron, SS, Alabama
The Niners took Taylor Mays a couple years ago and he didn't work out. They still have a hole at Strong Safety. If Barron doesn't work out they can trade him to the Bengals for a 6th round pick and Zimmer can getting him playing right.
30. New England Patriots- Vinny Curry, DE/OLB, Marshall
That's right, if I'm Bill Belicheck I'm going to double dip with pass rushers. If the Patriots have a good pass rush their defense is at least middle of the pack and they're probably right up there with Green Bay as favorites to win it all.
31. Pittsburgh Steelers- Barrett Jones, OT, Alabama
The Steelers offensive line has been awful for a few years now. I'm suprised they've won as much as they have, I guess that just proves defense wins championships. Jones can play about anywhere on the line and that is important as the Steelers have holes about everywhere on the line except Center.
32. Green Bay Packers- Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia
The Packers don't really have any holes and this pick is basically a luxury. When you have a situation like that adding depth to an offensive line that protects Aaron Rodgers is always a good thing. Glenn is the top offensive lineman left and getting someone on the interior is important as they have the Lions with Suh and Fairley in their division.

Urban Meyer
It's time for the Buckeyes and Urban Meyer to make the announcement already. I understand they wanted to have respect for Luke Fickell and the Michigan game, but word got out too early and now the longer this thing drags on the worse it's starting to look. Buckeye fans everywhere are basically on the edge of their seat waiting for this announcement.
Also the quicker this thing is made official, the quicker the Buckeyes can start landing some top recruits. They can get the ones that were leaning towards Ohio State and maybe change the minds of some that have given a verbal commitment elsewhere. Especially the ones from Ohio leaning towards Michigan because they've been told the coaching situation and the situation with the NCAA is unstable. The coaching situation is about to be solved with one of the top two coaches in college football and as far as the violations go, there has been precedent with this kind of violation before and I don't think Ohio State is going to receive a bowl ban.
Bottom line is the quicker this thing gets wrapped up the quicker the program can move on and start becoming a national powerhouse again, immediately. I don't want any more losses to Michigan! It had been so long I had forgotten how bad that felt. Not to mention, every friend of mine who is a Michigan fan came out of the woodworks yesterday to talk some smack. Seriously on win in 8 years against a Buckeye team that was down this year due to everything that went on and your gonna talk smack. Anyway no more losses to Michigan. So hurry and make this thing official Ohio State and Urban Meyer.

Time to get rid of the BCS
Yes most of the country thinks the BCS is BS. I am in the majority. There have been several calls for a playoff, a plus one, or something along those lines to fix what is the only major sport where the champion isn't exactly decided on the field. However presidents of these colleges don't want to do away with the bowl system. Most say it's because they don't want these kids to miss school, but that's crap! It's because of the big money these schools make off these bowl games, along with the NCAA.
I don't know who these people think they are fooling. These kids are athlete/students not the other way around. Participants of major college sports are on campus year round and with the dollars they bring in they focus on their sport first and school is second.
Most people, especially the talking heads on ESPN, call for a playoff or something of the sort in NCAA division 1/FBS Football. Yet I never hear any of them come up with any kind of plan or how they would replace all that missed money from the Bowl games. There's no chance the NCAA is going to replace the BCS if it loses money in the process.
Well I have a plan that includes an 8 team NCAA Football playoff and you wouldn't lose a single bowl game and the 4 major BCS bowls would all still be marquee games making just as much, if not more money. Also as far as the BS excuse of kids missing class, only 4 schools would have to play an additional game, and two of those four would have to play two games.
Here's the plan:
You keep the BCS Standings, the top 4 schools in those end of the season standings are guaranteed a spot in the now called "BCS Playoffs." Also the winners of the SEC, Pac 12, Big Ten, and Big 12 are guaranteed spots in the Playoffs. Sorry ACC and Big East your conferences are just not strong enough. Now these AQ schools will be revisited after every single season and if a conference gets strong enough it can be added or if one of those 4 conferences weaken enough they can lose their AQ status. Now it's likely some of those schools winning their AQ conference will be a top 4 BCS ranked team. In that case for the rest of the 8 teams you just move down the list, 5, 6, 7, 8. Only being in the top 4 guarantees you a spot in the playoff if you are in a non AQ conference because one of the AQ winners could be from a team outside the top 8. So basically it goes the 4 AQ conference winners then the next 4 highest BCS ranked schools make up an 8 team playoff.
Now here's the part for those wanting to keep the bowls. You use the 4 BCS Bowls: Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Fiesta Bowl (if they get their act together). These 4 bowls will host the 1st round of the NCAA Football playoffs with each bowl alternating between games 1 seed vs 8 seed, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5 on a yearly basis. Yes we would lose some of the tradition with the Big Ten and Pac Ten/Twelve and some of the other bowls, but really we have teams from Idaho contemplating joining the Big East. Nebraska and Oklahoma no longer play each other. It's time to let these traditions grow. I guarantee these bowl games would be a lot more exciting if a trip to the Football version of the Final Four were on the line.
Now the four winners of these games will go on to a national semi-final or Final 4. This could be handled a couple different ways. My way would be to have them on a neutral site that alternates every year. You could use the Bowl Game Sites exclusively, but if it were up to me I'd move them to other places as well. The winner of these Final 4 games would then go on to a National Championship game that the participants of have been decided on the field and not in a computer and a human poll. Also I would hold the National Championship Game in the same city/venue as I held the Final 4/Semi-Final games. So it would basically be an event that started on a weekend in early January with the Final 4 and would end the following Saturday with the Championship Game.
To sum up, this is a way better idea than the current BCS system now. BCS stands for Bowl Championship Series, well right now it's not a Bowl Championship Series it's a Bowl Championship Game. If we did it my way it would be a Bowl Championship Series in every sense of the words. From the Friday before the Semi-Finals to the following weekend's Championship game the entire time in between would be an event likely comparable to Super Bowl Week. You could even move it up to the end of December as it's starting time and it would go on during most colleges Winter Break. Although I believe most are still on Winter Break in early January as well.
This would also be the fairest system as it would likely allow teams from Non AQ conferences that run the table during the regular season at least a shot of getting to play for a championship. There would never be unbeaten teams that didn't even get a shot to win it all. So lets see the fairest system, more entertaining, and don't tell me this would take away from the regular season because now the regular season would be a fight for more teams to get into these playoffs, and this system would probably attract more interest and bring in more dollars. It's a win for everyone, the fans and the money hungry school presidents and NCAA officials.

You keep the BCS Standings, the top 4 schools in those end of the season standings are guaranteed a spot in the now called "BCS Playoffs." Also the winners of the SEC, Pac 12, Big Ten, and Big 12 are guaranteed spots in the Playoffs. Sorry ACC and Big East your conferences are just not strong enough. Now these AQ schools will be revisited after every single season and if a conference gets strong enough it can be added or if one of those 4 conferences weaken enough they can lose their AQ status. Now it's likely some of those schools winning their AQ conference will be a top 4 BCS ranked team. In that case for the rest of the 8 teams you just move down the list, 5, 6, 7, 8. Only being in the top 4 guarantees you a spot in the playoff if you are in a non AQ conference because one of the AQ winners could be from a team outside the top 8. So basically it goes the 4 AQ conference winners then the next 4 highest BCS ranked schools make up an 8 team playoff.
Now here's the part for those wanting to keep the bowls. You use the 4 BCS Bowls: Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Fiesta Bowl (if they get their act together). These 4 bowls will host the 1st round of the NCAA Football playoffs with each bowl alternating between games 1 seed vs 8 seed, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5 on a yearly basis. Yes we would lose some of the tradition with the Big Ten and Pac Ten/Twelve and some of the other bowls, but really we have teams from Idaho contemplating joining the Big East. Nebraska and Oklahoma no longer play each other. It's time to let these traditions grow. I guarantee these bowl games would be a lot more exciting if a trip to the Football version of the Final Four were on the line.
Now the four winners of these games will go on to a national semi-final or Final 4. This could be handled a couple different ways. My way would be to have them on a neutral site that alternates every year. You could use the Bowl Game Sites exclusively, but if it were up to me I'd move them to other places as well. The winner of these Final 4 games would then go on to a National Championship game that the participants of have been decided on the field and not in a computer and a human poll. Also I would hold the National Championship Game in the same city/venue as I held the Final 4/Semi-Final games. So it would basically be an event that started on a weekend in early January with the Final 4 and would end the following Saturday with the Championship Game.
To sum up, this is a way better idea than the current BCS system now. BCS stands for Bowl Championship Series, well right now it's not a Bowl Championship Series it's a Bowl Championship Game. If we did it my way it would be a Bowl Championship Series in every sense of the words. From the Friday before the Semi-Finals to the following weekend's Championship game the entire time in between would be an event likely comparable to Super Bowl Week. You could even move it up to the end of December as it's starting time and it would go on during most colleges Winter Break. Although I believe most are still on Winter Break in early January as well.
This would also be the fairest system as it would likely allow teams from Non AQ conferences that run the table during the regular season at least a shot of getting to play for a championship. There would never be unbeaten teams that didn't even get a shot to win it all. So lets see the fairest system, more entertaining, and don't tell me this would take away from the regular season because now the regular season would be a fight for more teams to get into these playoffs, and this system would probably attract more interest and bring in more dollars. It's a win for everyone, the fans and the money hungry school presidents and NCAA officials.
Urban Meyer to be next coach at Ohio State?
Where there's smoke there's usually fire and in this case there seems to be a lot of smoke. This past weekend there were reports that Urban Meyer flew to Ohio State. Now things are starting to really heat up as multiple sources are saying it's basically a done deal.
I am a Buckeye fan and I know this about Buckeye fans, we are crazy when it comes to Ohio State Football. People actually tracked a flight from Gainesville to the Ohio State Airport. That's when the rumors began and someone posted on twitter that Meyer would become the next coach at 7 years 35 million dollars. Now it's being reported 7 years 40 million dollars. ( I should have become a football coach with that kind of money being thrown around)
Meyer denied that there was a deal in place, but not many are buying that. For a few reasons, one Meyer said at this time there is no deal in place, not this is completely false and I will not be coaching at Ohio State. Two, Meyer was set to call the Ohio State-Michigan game this weekend but has now been pulled from that game. ESPN said that it was because there were so many story lines in college football this weekend that he would be of better use in the studio. I'm not buying that either. It's looking like it's a sure thing that Meyer is the next head coach at The Ohio State University.

They could lose for the first time to Michigan in 8 years. Recruiting has not been as succesful for the Buckeyes due to the team kind of being in limbo.

2012 NFL Mock Draft
*draft order based on current NFL standings
1. Indianapolis Colts- Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
Andrew Luck is going to be the first pick no matter who is picking here. Even if the Colts don't want Luck they will be able to trade this pick and get a king's ransom for it. Word is that Payton Manning doesn't want the Colts to take Luck. It would be tough for Colts fans to see Manning traded, but ask Green Bay how it's working out for them moving on from Favre for Aaron Rodgers.
2. St. Louis Rams- Matt Kalil, OT, USC
This would be a tough call for the Rams. They could use Justin Blackmon and they have used high picks on offensive Tackles recently and whiffed. That being said the Left Tackle position is a higher value position, Kalil is probably higher on their board, and this would allow Saffold to move to the right side, Smith to move to Guard with his short arms, and give Bradford security on his blind side for his career.
3. Carolina Panthers- Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
The Panthers have hit on their QB of the future and now they will go out and get him some weapons. Steve Smith has wanted a legit threat across from him at WR for years to take some of the coverage away.
4. Minnesota Vikings- Jonathon Martin, OT, Stanford
The Vikings also think they have their man at QB for the future. Getting him an elite LT should be a top priority. Also Martin is a mauler in the run game so Adrian Peterson would like and benefit from this pick as well.
5. Washington Redskins- Matt Barkley, QB, USC
The Redskins need an upgrade at QB in the worst way. If they are in a position to get one of the top three QB's they will pull the trigger, no doubt. It looks right now like they will be picking high enough, especially if the poor QB play continues.
6. Miami Dolphins- Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
The Dolphins better be careful because they are starting to play well and win games that are meaningless and could find themselves picking too low to get one of these top three first round QB's. However the Broncos released Kyle Orton today so he could end up in Miami.
7. Arizona Cardinals- Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
Reiff has played very well this year and continues to move up draft boards. It was Kalil and Martin then everyone else, but Reiff is starting to get into that top ten conversation. The Cards currently have two overpaid Tackles that are below average. This will allow them to cut one of their salaries.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars- Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
This will be an easy pick if Coples is still available when the Jags are on the clock. They have needed an upgrade at DE for years. They tried to bring in Aaron Kampman a couple years ago, but he blew out his knee the very first training camp in Jacksonville and they still haven't found a good pass rusher.
9. Cleveland Browns- Alshon Jeffrey, WR, South Carolina
If you would have told Cleveland fans before the season started that they would land Alshon Jeffrey in next year's draft they would have been ecstatic for two reasons. One is going into this season Jeffrey was considered the best WR in college. Two Cleveland was projected to have a good season by most so they thought they would be picking lower. Now Jeffrey has slid down some, but he's still very talented and Cleveland needs WR help big time as they have zero legit weapons.
10. Kansas City Chiefs- Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Chiefs have Tamba Hali to bring a pass rush and that is it off the edge. The elite 3-4 defenses all have multiple LB's that can get to the QB. The Chiefs defense has a lot of pieces in place they just need to add LB help off the edge and inside.
11. San Diego Chargers- Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
The Chargers are thin at CB. They traded Cromartie before last season and Quinton Jammer is 33 years old and doesn't have many years left. Claiborne is the top CB in a class that is loaded with good CB's.
12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
Talib may be in jail by next season and Ronde Barber has to be close to retirement. Dennard isn't the next best CB, but the Bucs have put out there that they really like Dennard and I don't think it's a smoke screen because where they will pick there will be plenty of good CB's available.
13. Seattle Seahawks- Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
Tannehill is flying up draft boards and we all saw what happened when multiple teams have QB needs in this year's draft, teams will reach. The Seahawks can not contend with Tavaris Jackson or Charlie Whitehurst playing QB.
14. Philadelphia Eagles- Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College
Teams have been gashing the Eagles defense right up the middle in both the running game and with the pass. Kuechly would give them someone that is a sure tackler and a solid, smart player in the middle of that defense. It's unbelievable that the "Dream Team" is picking this high with all that talent on that team.
15. Tennessee Titans- Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State
The Titans have needed an upgrade at all three LB spots for the last couple of years. They haven't had a good LB since Bullock. They might as well start in the middle with a LB that can go sideline to sideline and make plays all over the field.
16. Buffalo Bills- Micheal Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
The Bills offense started off this season on fire. It's been all downhill since week 4 for them since that 3-0 start. Part of the reason is teams are taking away Steve Johnson and they have no other real receiving threats.
17. New York Jets- Alameda Ta'amu, DT, Washington
Good Nose Tackles are almost impossible to find and teams that have them have a big advantage over defenses that don't. Kris Jenkins has been on IR basically the last three seasons and he's likely done. This pick could get the Jets D back to that dominant defense that's impossible to run on.
18. Denver Broncos- Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
Richardson's talent has him ranked top five on most big boards. The position he plays though has less value than almost any other position. For the Broncos though he'd be very valuable as a John Fox coached team is going to run the ball a ton.
19. New York Giants- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
The Giants took Prince Amukamara in the first round in this year's draft and they are getting good CB play right now. At the beginning of the year they were decimated by injury at CB and had people coming in off the street to start. They need to add depth and in today's pass happy NFL you can't have too many good CB's.

That's right, if I'm Mike Holmgren I'm gonna double dip at WR in the first round and get my QB some weapons. I still think Colt McCoy can be a good QB in the NFL, but with the WR's they currently have no one could be successful. Toon would give the Browns two big body WR's and Toon can stretch the field and be a good compliment to Jeffrey.
21. Cincinnati Bengals- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
Jenkins may be the best CB in this draft and would probably be a top ten pick or close to it if he hadn't been arrested for having weed. The Bengals have to make adding depth to the CB position the top priority this off season. I'd like to see them bring back Adam Jones and Nate Clements and then draft Jenkins in the first round. With Leon Hall out for the rest of the year they are going to struggle against the pass. Lets not be caught next year with a lack of depth at CB.
22. Cincinnati Bengals- David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
It's been a long time since the Bengals took an interior offensive lineman early in the draft. The last time was Eric Steinbach in the 2nd round. Within a couple years of that they had one of the best lines in the NFL. DeCastro is the best Guard in this draft and one of the best to come out in years. He's a mauler in the run game and way better than average pass blocking.
Nate Livings has not played very well and he needs to be upgraded. On the other side Bobbie Williams is long in the tooth and doesn't have many years left. I like the Boling pick in this year's draft and think he and DeCastro could be the future at Guard for the next ten years. An offensive line of Whitworth, DeCastro, Cook, Williams/Boling, and Smith would be one of the best in the NFL. Add to that Dalton and all the young playmakers at WR and TE and this offense could be great for a long time.
23. Dallas Cowboys- Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
The Cowboys secondary has been killed by injuries this year just like a lot of other teams. Terrance Newman is starting to lose some of that world class speed due to getting old and Mike Jenkins is afraid to tackle anyone.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers- Barrett Jones, OT, Alabama
Jones probably has the versatility to play about anywhere on the line other than Center. That would be huge for Pittsburgh who needs help all over that offensive line. It's hard to believe they've won as much as they have with how bad that line has been. That just proves defense wins championships.
25. Chicago Bears- Mike Brewster, OC, Ohio State
The Bears have really struggled at the Center position this year since Olin Kruetz left to the Saints and then retired. Brewster is the best Center in this draft, some have put Konz from Wisconsin over him, but Brewster has been consistently good for three years at Ohio State I don't know why he would slide.
26. Detroit Lions- Peter Konz, OC, Wisconsin
If you ask about any Detroit fan what position they need the most most would say Center. Brewster and Konz are head and shoulders above the rest at the Center position and NFL teams are starting to value Center more and more as we've seen with Centers going in the first round in the past few drafts.
27. New England Patriots- Vinny Currey, DE/OLB, Marshall
The Patriots can not pass on one of the top tweener pass rushers again this year. A good pass rush would turn that defense into at least an average defense. If the Pats defense was average they would probably be undefeated and right up there with the Packers as the favorites to win it all.
28. New England Patriots- Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
Another team with two picks in the first round that should double dip at a position. The Pats have been getting torched through the air but they have good players in the secondary. Teams just have all day to throw on them. They could bring Currey off the edge on one side and Jenkins off the other side and have one of the better pass rushes in the NFL.
29. Baltimore Ravens- Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame
Te'o could be the heir to the throne from Ray Lewis so to speak. Ozzie Newsome likes to take the best player available and Manti is the best that fits their system in Baltimore. He could play next to Lewis in the 3-4 for a year or two and then be the leader of that defense.
30. Houston Texans- Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
People have Broyles mid 2nd round because of his size. I don't care how small he is, he plays huge. He can go up over bigger defenders and get the ball, he has excellent hands, speed, and quickness. Broyles would be a perfect compliment to Andre Johnson.
31. San Francisco 49ers- Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson
Not the biggest need for San Francisco, but at this point Thompson would be an absolute steal. The only real weak spot they have is sometimes they can be run on up the middle of that defense and Thompson would take care of that.
32. Green Bay Packers- Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
The Packers can basically draft wherever they want as they don't have any major holes. When you have a QB the caliber of Aaron Rodgers it's never a bad idea to take an offensive lineman in the first round and add depth to the line that protects Rodgers. By the way I realize GB and SF can't be the last two picks as they are in the same conference, but right now they have the best two records.

With Leon Hall out for the rest of the year they are going to struggle against the pass. Lets not be caught next year with a lack of depth at CB.
22. Cincinnati Bengals- David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
It's been a long time since the Bengals took an interior offensive lineman early in the draft. The last time was Eric Steinbach in the 2nd round. Within a couple years of that they had one of the best lines in the NFL. DeCastro is the best Guard in this draft and one of the best to come out in years. He's a mauler in the run game and way better than average pass blocking.
Nate Livings has not played very well and he needs to be upgraded. On the other side Bobbie Williams is long in the tooth and doesn't have many years left. I like the Boling pick in this year's draft and think he and DeCastro could be the future at Guard for the next ten years. An offensive line of Whitworth, DeCastro, Cook, Williams/Boling, and Smith would be one of the best in the NFL. Add to that Dalton and all the young playmakers at WR and TE and this offense could be great for a long time.
23. Dallas Cowboys- Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
The Cowboys secondary has been killed by injuries this year just like a lot of other teams. Terrance Newman is starting to lose some of that world class speed due to getting old and Mike Jenkins is afraid to tackle anyone.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers- Barrett Jones, OT, Alabama
Jones probably has the versatility to play about anywhere on the line other than Center. That would be huge for Pittsburgh who needs help all over that offensive line. It's hard to believe they've won as much as they have with how bad that line has been. That just proves defense wins championships.
25. Chicago Bears- Mike Brewster, OC, Ohio State
The Bears have really struggled at the Center position this year since Olin Kruetz left to the Saints and then retired. Brewster is the best Center in this draft, some have put Konz from Wisconsin over him, but Brewster has been consistently good for three years at Ohio State I don't know why he would slide.
26. Detroit Lions- Peter Konz, OC, Wisconsin
If you ask about any Detroit fan what position they need the most most would say Center. Brewster and Konz are head and shoulders above the rest at the Center position and NFL teams are starting to value Center more and more as we've seen with Centers going in the first round in the past few drafts.
27. New England Patriots- Vinny Currey, DE/OLB, Marshall
The Patriots can not pass on one of the top tweener pass rushers again this year. A good pass rush would turn that defense into at least an average defense. If the Pats defense was average they would probably be undefeated and right up there with the Packers as the favorites to win it all.
28. New England Patriots- Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
Another team with two picks in the first round that should double dip at a position. The Pats have been getting torched through the air but they have good players in the secondary. Teams just have all day to throw on them. They could bring Currey off the edge on one side and Jenkins off the other side and have one of the better pass rushes in the NFL.
29. Baltimore Ravens- Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame
Te'o could be the heir to the throne from Ray Lewis so to speak. Ozzie Newsome likes to take the best player available and Manti is the best that fits their system in Baltimore. He could play next to Lewis in the 3-4 for a year or two and then be the leader of that defense.
30. Houston Texans- Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
People have Broyles mid 2nd round because of his size. I don't care how small he is, he plays huge. He can go up over bigger defenders and get the ball, he has excellent hands, speed, and quickness. Broyles would be a perfect compliment to Andre Johnson.
31. San Francisco 49ers- Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson
Not the biggest need for San Francisco, but at this point Thompson would be an absolute steal. The only real weak spot they have is sometimes they can be run on up the middle of that defense and Thompson would take care of that.
32. Green Bay Packers- Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
The Packers can basically draft wherever they want as they don't have any major holes. When you have a QB the caliber of Aaron Rodgers it's never a bad idea to take an offensive lineman in the first round and add depth to the line that protects Rodgers. By the way I realize GB and SF can't be the last two picks as they are in the same conference, but right now they have the best two records.

Cincinnati Bengals: A Look to the Future

The future has never looked so bright as a 30 year old Bengals fan. My first real memories of the Bengals were Super Bowl 23 and the loss to the 49ers. After that the rest of my childhood consisted of the 90's Bengals which were beyond awful. It's really amazing that a franchise could be that incompetant for an entire decade plus. The Bengals finally hired from outside the organization in 2003 and things started to get better. There was a buzz in Cincinnati about NFL football with the Marvin Lewis hiring.
We all know what has happened since then. The great 2005 season ended with Kimo von Olhoffen diving into Carson Palmer's knee and it kind of went downhill from that. Yeah there was the 09 playoff appearance, but in 2005 it looked like Cincinnati might have a team that would be in the playoffs year after year. It wasn't in the stars.
Fast forward to this off-season. It's supposed to be rebuilding time. The franchise QB says he'd rather retire than play here anymore and the Chad Johnson/Ochocinco era comes to an end with a trade to the Patriots. National pundits are picking the Bengals to have the worst record in the NFL and they are the favorites to have the number one pick in next year's draft and get Andrew Luck. They take AJ Green in the first round of the draft and Andy Dalton in the second. A rookie QB and WR and no OTA's due to the lockout, no way this team has a shot to go .500 much less have a good season.
Well so far Dalton and Green are looking like one of the best rookie QB/WR duos in the history of the NFL. Mike Zimmer has the defense playing like a top five unit. The defensive line is as good as it's ever been in Cincy. They are stuffing the run and getting to the QB on a regular basis using an eight man rotation, thus keeping everyone fresh. The offensive line is playing extremely well and the running game is more than adequate.
There is major excitement about this team in this city and by Bengals fans across the country. The biggest reason is this team is very young and already this good. Things are only going to get better with the more experience this team gains. Last Sunday they went toe to toe with a Steelers team many are saying is the best in the AFC. They got off to a slow start but for the last three quarters the Bengals looked like the better team not the Steelers.
As Bengals fans we all know what the situation is with this team right now. They have beyond exceded the expectations of most fans and now find themselves contenders to make the playoffs and maybe even win a game or two once they get there. For me, everything else that happens this year is just icing on the cake. What really gets me excited as a fan is what could happen with this team in 2012, 2013, 2014, and even beyond.
Thanks to Carson Palmer's refusal to play here anymore, Mike Brown's stubborness, and Jason Campbell landing on the IR at the hands of the Cleveland Browns, the Bengals now have two picks in the first round in next year's draft and likely an additional second rounder in the 2013 draft. Also Jonathon Joseph left via free agency to sign with Houston and the Bengals will likely get a third round compensatory pick for that loss. That's right the Bengals are looking at nine picks within the first three rounds of the next two drafts. They are already the second youngest team in the NFL and are loaded with talent at just about every position group. That means most of these draft picks are going to be used not to fill a starting role immediately, but to add depth to a team that is already young, talented, and stocked at every position.
This team also sits way under the salary cap and within a couple years has to be within 99% of the cap number which means Mike Brown will have to spend money. Now some of that will be used to extend contracts of current players and they should get Dalton and Green signed long term after next season. There also will be money left to go to some veteran free agents to add a nice mix of veterans with a team that is loaded with young players in their first five years in the NFL.
The bottom line is this team is poised to make a couple Super Bowl runs within the next 4 or 5 years. The pieces are in place at the key positions: QB, O line, D line, WR, and CB. Well they could use some extra depth at CB and I'm sure that's coming next off season either in the draft or free agency. They also need to upgrade the Guard position. Other than that they can draft just about wherever they want and take the best players available to them on their draft board.
When the Bengals last made the Super Bowl I was six years old. Now I have a son that is three years old and I am hoping the love for the Bengals passes on to him with him getting to see the Cincinnati Bengals play in a Super Bowl while he is at a young age and it plants a seed in him to be a fan for life like it did for me. 2012 NFL Mock Draft
*based on current NFL standings.
1. Indianapolis Colts- Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
Andrew Luck is going to be the first overall pick whether the Colts take him or not. They could trade this pick and get a king's ransom if they decide not to go with Luck as the future of their franchise. I personally would take Luck and have him sit for a year and then trade Peyton Manning. Yeah as a Colts fan that would stink to see Manning go somewhere else, but ask Packer fans how trading Favre has worked out for them.
2. St. Louis Rams- Matt Kalil, OT, USC
The Rams have taken Offensive Tackles high in the first round a lot lately and they haven't worked out great. I've been mocking Justin Blackmon here to give Bradford that legit number one WR, but I think the Rams are going to go with the player higher on the board. Kalil comes from a family with NFL bloodlines and his brother Ryan is a dominant offensive lineman in the NFL right now. This will also allow the Rams to move Saffold to RT and Jason Smith to Guard where he belongs with his short arms.
3. Miami Dolphins- Matt Barkley, QB, USC
The Dolphins are definitely taking a QB in next year's draft. They screwed up and won some games this year that are meaningless and have basically taken themselves out of the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. That being said, in other years Barkley could very well have been a number one overall pick himself and I think can still be a very good NFL QB. He's definitely an upgrade over what they currently have at Miami right now.
4. Carolina Panthers- Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
The Panthers have their franchise QB in Cam Newton. Now they are going to do everything they can to make sure he has a shot to succeed and that starts with getting him some weapons other than Steve Smith. Smith has wanted a legit threat opposite him for years to help take some of the pressure and coverage off of him.
5. Minnesota Vikings- Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
Jared Allen has been an absolute beast this year leading the NFL in sacks. Other than Allen, no on else is getting any pressure on the QB at all. The Vikings are in a division with Green Bay and to beat the Packers you have to get to Rodgers. It's going to take more than just Allen to do that.
6. Cleveland Browns- Alshon Jeffrey, WR, South Carolina
Cleveland passed on Julio Jones in this year's draft and they still don't have any weapons on the outside. Some think McCoy is not the man for the job and Cleveland should take a QB, but I think they should at least try to get him some weapons and see what he can do. Jeffrey would give them a legit number one WR, something they've been missing since they came back into the league.
7. Washington Redskins- Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
There is no way that Washington doesn't take a QB if one of the top three QB's are on the board when they pick in the first round. Mike Shanahan doesn't wanna watch another season of Rex Grossman or John Beck playing QB.
8. Seattle Seahawks- Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
Seattle has the best young Safety duo in the NFL and if they land Claiborne may be on the way to having the best secondary in the NFL. Claiborne is right up there talent wise with Patrick Peterson who was a top five pick in last year's draft and is the best CB of this loaded class of CB's. I'm sure the fans in Seattle will hope for a QB to fall to them but at this point the top 3 are gone and there isn't another worth the pick this high.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars- Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
This would be a shock and a huge reach in a lot of people's eyes, but the Jags have pulled some shockers on draft day. They miss out on the DE they need with Coples gone and both elite WR's are gone. Toon isn't too far behind though, he has good size, speed, hands, and can stretch the field vertically. The Jags current options at WR aren't very good and they have Gabbert their future QB they need to get him some weapons.
10. Arizona Cardinals- Jonathon Martin, OT, Stanford
If the Cards are picking 10th and Martin is still there they will be ecstatic. Martin is a top 5 talent and it's a huge position of need with two players at Tackle that are over paid and under performing. This will allow them to cut at least one of them and get rid of that salary.
11. Philadelphia Eagles- Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State
Who would have thought that the "Dream Team" would be picking this high. A big reason is the defense, especially the LB's. It's a mix of poor run and pass defense and that usually points to bad LB play. Burfict will give them someone in the middle that goes sideline to sideline and makes plays.
12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
Talib may be heading to prison and Ronde Barber has to be close to retirement right? Behind those two there isn't much there and CB depth is a must in the NFC South where you have Brees, Ryan, and now Newton who all throw the ball a ton.
13. Kansas City Chiefs- Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
This will allow KC to move Albert to Guard where he's better suited. The Chiefs also need another pass rusher in their 3-4 defense, but Pioli is of the Patriots belief that you get those tweener DE/OLB players in later rounds. They value the OT much more. That and Haley is an offensive minded coach and that will win out come draft day.
14. Denver Broncos- Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
The Broncos are going to be a team that runs a ton as long as John Fox is there, and Tim Tebow. Fox doesn't currently like the backs on that roster and tried to over pay to bring in DeAngelo Williams. As a Bengals fan I'd kind of like to see Richardson in orange and black, but I'm not a big believer in taking a RB in the first round.
15. San Diego Chargers- Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Chargers have had a need for a pass rusher since they made Shawn Merriman stop taking steroids. Larry English is officially a bust. Upshaw is the best of the 3-4 edge pass rushers in this class.
16. Dallas Cowboys- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
The Cowboys are super thin at CB. At the beginning of the season undrafted rookies were starting. Newman is getting old and Mike Jenkins is afraid to tackle. Janoris Jenkins started at Florida as a true freshman and would likely be a top ten pick if not for the weed arrest. I don't think that'll bother Jerry Jones. He passed on Moss years ago and regretted it and then hit on Dez Bryant, both with "character concerns".
17. Tennessee Titans- Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame
The Titans current group of LB's is way below average. Their defensive line and Cortland Finnegan have carried their defense so far this year. They have lacked a quality LB really since Keith Bullock. Te'o will give them a leader and a playmaker in the middle of that defense.
18. Cleveland Browns- Micheal Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
That's right, if I'm Mike Holmgren I'm taking two first round WR's and solidifying the position for the next decade with two playmakers that will make opposing defenses play honest and not be able to just roll coverage over to Jeffrey. This gives Colt McCoy no excuses if he can't succeed with these two it's time to find a new QB.
19. Buffalo Bills- Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
The Bills really need a legit pass rusher coming off the edge in the worst way. They drafted Aaron Maybin before Chan Gailey got there and put in the 3-4 defense and Maybin doesn't fit the system.
20. New York Jets- Alameda Ta'amu, DT, Washington
Quality Nose Tackles are almost impossible to find. Kris Jenkins has basically been on IR the last three seasons. Because of this the Jets run defense hasn't been as dominant as it was. If you run a 3-4 defense things are ten times easier when you have that quality Nose Tackle that takes up blockers.
21. Cincinnati Bengals- David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
The two biggest needs heading into next year's draft will likely be CB and OG. This draft class is loaded at CB. With this pick from Oakland I would take DeCastro if he's still available. He's the best interior offensive lineman in this class. DeCastro is a mauler in the run game and can more than hold his own against the pass.
Livings has struggled this year and basically has been unimpressive since he began starting for the Bengals. Bobbie Williams is good but running out of time as an NFL player. They took Boling in last year's draft which I believe will turn out to be a very good pick. This pick though could give them a line that is as dominant as the 2005 offensive line with Jones, Steinbach, Braham, Williams, and Anderson. With the weapons they have in the passing game and a good young QB the sky is the limit for this offense if they can get a line like this: Whitworth, DeCastro, Cook, Williams/Boling, Smith.
22. Detroit Lions- Barrett Jones, OT, Alabama
Jones' stock has been on the rise all year and he's now a legitimate first round prospect. The Lions have needed an upgrade over Backus at LT for years. They seem to like Backus and I don't know why. Jones could likely play either Guard or Tackle position and that versatility will make him that much more valuable and the Lions could use help all over that line.
23. Cincinnati Bengals- Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
Since Janoris Jenkins is already gone Dennard is the pick here. I really hope the Raiders lose enough games for the Bengals to get Jenkins. I think he's the best CB in this draft and would be a top 5 pick if not for the arrest. That said Dennard is a good player as well. I think he's a perfect compliment from Hall who is more a technician. Dennard is quick with good hips and shifty and can cover both outside and slot WR's while Hall covers the bigger stronger WR's, Dennard can cover the quicker smaller WR's that make more cuts.
Jenkins, Dennard, or Minnifield would be acceptable picks for me in the first round. Either way they need to add depth to the CB position. Leon Hall is out for the year and if Adam Jones can't stay healthy that could be costly if Kelly Jennings doesn't start showing some improvement fast. The Bengals are set up to make a run at a Super Bowl in the next few years and they need as many good CB's as they can get in a pass happy NFL.
24. Chicago Bears- Mike Brewster, OC, Ohio State
The Bears need a Center to replace Olin Kruetz who left for the Saints and then retired. Their offensive line has been less than mediocre for years and they haven't really had the picks to improve it losing two first rounders in the Cutler trade.
25. Baltimore Ravens- Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College
Ozzie Newsome doesn't draft for need he takes the best player on the board that fits their scheme. Kuechly is it here and could be the heir apparent to Ray Lewis in the middle of that defense.

Like the Ravens the Giants don't really draft for need and their GM loves taking defensive lineman in the first round. Especially when it's a steal like Thompson is this late. Why not having a defensive line loaded with depth and talent won them a Super Bowl.
27. New England Patriots- Ronnell Lewis, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
This has to be the year the Patriots use both of their first round picks and get themselves a pass rusher early. I know they won Super Bowls by taking those tweener types later in the draft, but the rest of the NFL has caught on and they are going much earlier now. The Pats simply can not ignore their pass rush another year the defense has been below average in New England, if it was middle of the pack they would probably be the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
28. New England Patriots- Jeff Fuller, WR, Texas A&M
Don't get me wrong the Patriots have a good offense, but teams are starting to realize they can just sit on their short routes. They don't really have a big WR threat on the outside that can challenge them deep. Fuller would give them a different type of WR with a big body that will make teams play them honest.
29. Houston Texans- Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
Most have a mid to late second round grade on Broyles, no way he should go that late. Broyles is a great player I don't care what his size is, he goes up over bigger defenders and comes down with the ball. He has great hands, is shifty, quick, fast, and gets seperation quickly and easily. He would be a perfect compliment to Andre Johnson in Houston. On a side note I feel bad for Texans fans, they finally look like they will make the playoffs and lose Schaub for the year giving them no chance to make a deep run.

The Niners took Taylor Mays in the 2nd a couple years ago and that didn't work out at all for them. Now they still have a hole at SS and Barron is the best Safety in this draft. If it doesn't work out they can always trade him to the Bengals for a 7th rounder.
31. Pittsburgh Steelers- Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
I hate seeing Buckeyes go to the Steelers, it makes it harder to root for them. They do need some major help on the offensive line in Pittsburgh though. For the last few years Ben has been getting killed and their starters always seem to be injured. Really i'm suprised they've won as much as they have lately. That just proves defense wins championships.
32. Green Bay Packers- Levy Adcock, OT, Oklahoma State
When you are in a position like Green Bay where you don't have many, if any, holes then you should add first round talent/depth to the offensive line to protect what may be the best QB in football right now. Rodgers is definitely the favorite to win the MVP this year. Every chance they get they should be adding someone to that O line as early as they can in drafts to keep him as protected as possible. If I'm GM in Green Bay I want all my backup offensive lineman to be top notch and keep Rodgers protected.

Now they are going to do everything they can to make sure he has a shot to succeed and that starts with getting him some weapons other than Steve Smith. Smith has wanted a legit threat opposite him for years to help take some of the pressure and coverage off of him.
5. Minnesota Vikings- Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
Jared Allen has been an absolute beast this year leading the NFL in sacks. Other than Allen, no on else is getting any pressure on the QB at all. The Vikings are in a division with Green Bay and to beat the Packers you have to get to Rodgers. It's going to take more than just Allen to do that.
6. Cleveland Browns- Alshon Jeffrey, WR, South Carolina
Cleveland passed on Julio Jones in this year's draft and they still don't have any weapons on the outside. Some think McCoy is not the man for the job and Cleveland should take a QB, but I think they should at least try to get him some weapons and see what he can do. Jeffrey would give them a legit number one WR, something they've been missing since they came back into the league.
7. Washington Redskins- Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
There is no way that Washington doesn't take a QB if one of the top three QB's are on the board when they pick in the first round. Mike Shanahan doesn't wanna watch another season of Rex Grossman or John Beck playing QB.
8. Seattle Seahawks- Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
Seattle has the best young Safety duo in the NFL and if they land Claiborne may be on the way to having the best secondary in the NFL. Claiborne is right up there talent wise with Patrick Peterson who was a top five pick in last year's draft and is the best CB of this loaded class of CB's. I'm sure the fans in Seattle will hope for a QB to fall to them but at this point the top 3 are gone and there isn't another worth the pick this high.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars- Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
This would be a shock and a huge reach in a lot of people's eyes, but the Jags have pulled some shockers on draft day. They miss out on the DE they need with Coples gone and both elite WR's are gone. Toon isn't too far behind though, he has good size, speed, hands, and can stretch the field vertically. The Jags current options at WR aren't very good and they have Gabbert their future QB they need to get him some weapons.
10. Arizona Cardinals- Jonathon Martin, OT, Stanford
If the Cards are picking 10th and Martin is still there they will be ecstatic. Martin is a top 5 talent and it's a huge position of need with two players at Tackle that are over paid and under performing. This will allow them to cut at least one of them and get rid of that salary.
11. Philadelphia Eagles- Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State
Who would have thought that the "Dream Team" would be picking this high. A big reason is the defense, especially the LB's. It's a mix of poor run and pass defense and that usually points to bad LB play. Burfict will give them someone in the middle that goes sideline to sideline and makes plays.
12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
Talib may be heading to prison and Ronde Barber has to be close to retirement right? Behind those two there isn't much there and CB depth is a must in the NFC South where you have Brees, Ryan, and now Newton who all throw the ball a ton.
13. Kansas City Chiefs- Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
This will allow KC to move Albert to Guard where he's better suited. The Chiefs also need another pass rusher in their 3-4 defense, but Pioli is of the Patriots belief that you get those tweener DE/OLB players in later rounds. They value the OT much more. That and Haley is an offensive minded coach and that will win out come draft day.
14. Denver Broncos- Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
The Broncos are going to be a team that runs a ton as long as John Fox is there, and Tim Tebow. Fox doesn't currently like the backs on that roster and tried to over pay to bring in DeAngelo Williams. As a Bengals fan I'd kind of like to see Richardson in orange and black, but I'm not a big believer in taking a RB in the first round.
15. San Diego Chargers- Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Chargers have had a need for a pass rusher since they made Shawn Merriman stop taking steroids. Larry English is officially a bust. Upshaw is the best of the 3-4 edge pass rushers in this class.
16. Dallas Cowboys- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
The Cowboys are super thin at CB. At the beginning of the season undrafted rookies were starting. Newman is getting old and Mike Jenkins is afraid to tackle. Janoris Jenkins started at Florida as a true freshman and would likely be a top ten pick if not for the weed arrest. I don't think that'll bother Jerry Jones. He passed on Moss years ago and regretted it and then hit on Dez Bryant, both with "character concerns".
17. Tennessee Titans- Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame
The Titans current group of LB's is way below average. Their defensive line and Cortland Finnegan have carried their defense so far this year. They have lacked a quality LB really since Keith Bullock. Te'o will give them a leader and a playmaker in the middle of that defense.
18. Cleveland Browns- Micheal Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
That's right, if I'm Mike Holmgren I'm taking two first round WR's and solidifying the position for the next decade with two playmakers that will make opposing defenses play honest and not be able to just roll coverage over to Jeffrey. This gives Colt McCoy no excuses if he can't succeed with these two it's time to find a new QB.
19. Buffalo Bills- Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
The Bills really need a legit pass rusher coming off the edge in the worst way. They drafted Aaron Maybin before Chan Gailey got there and put in the 3-4 defense and Maybin doesn't fit the system.
20. New York Jets- Alameda Ta'amu, DT, Washington
Quality Nose Tackles are almost impossible to find. Kris Jenkins has basically been on IR the last three seasons. Because of this the Jets run defense hasn't been as dominant as it was. If you run a 3-4 defense things are ten times easier when you have that quality Nose Tackle that takes up blockers.
21. Cincinnati Bengals- David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
The two biggest needs heading into next year's draft will likely be CB and OG. This draft class is loaded at CB. With this pick from Oakland I would take DeCastro if he's still available. He's the best interior offensive lineman in this class. DeCastro is a mauler in the run game and can more than hold his own against the pass.
Livings has struggled this year and basically has been unimpressive since he began starting for the Bengals. Bobbie Williams is good but running out of time as an NFL player. They took Boling in last year's draft which I believe will turn out to be a very good pick. This pick though could give them a line that is as dominant as the 2005 offensive line with Jones, Steinbach, Braham, Williams, and Anderson. With the weapons they have in the passing game and a good young QB the sky is the limit for this offense if they can get a line like this: Whitworth, DeCastro, Cook, Williams/Boling, Smith.
22. Detroit Lions- Barrett Jones, OT, Alabama
Jones' stock has been on the rise all year and he's now a legitimate first round prospect. The Lions have needed an upgrade over Backus at LT for years. They seem to like Backus and I don't know why. Jones could likely play either Guard or Tackle position and that versatility will make him that much more valuable and the Lions could use help all over that line.
23. Cincinnati Bengals- Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
Since Janoris Jenkins is already gone Dennard is the pick here. I really hope the Raiders lose enough games for the Bengals to get Jenkins. I think he's the best CB in this draft and would be a top 5 pick if not for the arrest. That said Dennard is a good player as well. I think he's a perfect compliment from Hall who is more a technician. Dennard is quick with good hips and shifty and can cover both outside and slot WR's while Hall covers the bigger stronger WR's, Dennard can cover the quicker smaller WR's that make more cuts.
Jenkins, Dennard, or Minnifield would be acceptable picks for me in the first round. Either way they need to add depth to the CB position. Leon Hall is out for the year and if Adam Jones can't stay healthy that could be costly if Kelly Jennings doesn't start showing some improvement fast. The Bengals are set up to make a run at a Super Bowl in the next few years and they need as many good CB's as they can get in a pass happy NFL.
24. Chicago Bears- Mike Brewster, OC, Ohio State
The Bears need a Center to replace Olin Kruetz who left for the Saints and then retired. Their offensive line has been less than mediocre for years and they haven't really had the picks to improve it losing two first rounders in the Cutler trade.
25. Baltimore Ravens- Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College
Ozzie Newsome doesn't draft for need he takes the best player on the board that fits their scheme. Kuechly is it here and could be the heir apparent to Ray Lewis in the middle of that defense.
26. New York Giants- Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson
Like the Ravens the Giants don't really draft for need and their GM loves taking defensive lineman in the first round. Especially when it's a steal like Thompson is this late. Why not having a defensive line loaded with depth and talent won them a Super Bowl.
27. New England Patriots- Ronnell Lewis, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
This has to be the year the Patriots use both of their first round picks and get themselves a pass rusher early. I know they won Super Bowls by taking those tweener types later in the draft, but the rest of the NFL has caught on and they are going much earlier now. The Pats simply can not ignore their pass rush another year the defense has been below average in New England, if it was middle of the pack they would probably be the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
28. New England Patriots- Jeff Fuller, WR, Texas A&M
Don't get me wrong the Patriots have a good offense, but teams are starting to realize they can just sit on their short routes. They don't really have a big WR threat on the outside that can challenge them deep. Fuller would give them a different type of WR with a big body that will make teams play them honest.
29. Houston Texans- Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
Most have a mid to late second round grade on Broyles, no way he should go that late. Broyles is a great player I don't care what his size is, he goes up over bigger defenders and comes down with the ball. He has great hands, is shifty, quick, fast, and gets seperation quickly and easily. He would be a perfect compliment to Andre Johnson in Houston. On a side note I feel bad for Texans fans, they finally look like they will make the playoffs and lose Schaub for the year giving them no chance to make a deep run.
30. San Francisco 49ers- Mark Barron, SS, Alabama
The Niners took Taylor Mays in the 2nd a couple years ago and that didn't work out at all for them. Now they still have a hole at SS and Barron is the best Safety in this draft. If it doesn't work out they can always trade him to the Bengals for a 7th rounder.
31. Pittsburgh Steelers- Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
I hate seeing Buckeyes go to the Steelers, it makes it harder to root for them. They do need some major help on the offensive line in Pittsburgh though. For the last few years Ben has been getting killed and their starters always seem to be injured. Really i'm suprised they've won as much as they have lately. That just proves defense wins championships.
32. Green Bay Packers- Levy Adcock, OT, Oklahoma State
When you are in a position like Green Bay where you don't have many, if any, holes then you should add first round talent/depth to the offensive line to protect what may be the best QB in football right now. Rodgers is definitely the favorite to win the MVP this year. Every chance they get they should be adding someone to that O line as early as they can in drafts to keep him as protected as possible. If I'm GM in Green Bay I want all my backup offensive lineman to be top notch and keep Rodgers protected.

NFL Mid Season Awards

It's about the halfway point so here are Cincy Sports Live's Mid Season Awards for the 2011 NFL season. There's one on here that will absolutely shock Bengals fans!
Rookie of the Year: Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers
At this point Newton has more passing yards than Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. I am personally shocked at how well he came out of the gate. I honestly thought Newton was going to be a bust and had him pegged as the next Vince Young. I was dead wrong! He can throw the ball with the best of them. Yeah he has some interceptions and a losing record but the future is bright in Carolina. Also considered was Andy Dalton and AJ Green who are also having spectacular rookie seasons.
Biggest Suprise Team: San Francisco 49ers
They are currently 6-1 and have beaten some good teams to get there. Their only loss was an overtime game against Dallas that they should have won. Yeah the Bengals, Bills, and Lions are also big suprises, but I saw the Bills show signs the 2nd half of last year. The Lions have a lot of talented players. The Bengals have had a good defense for a few years now. SF has also but the play of Alex Smith and their secondary has been a shock to me.
Biggest Disappointment of a Team: Philadelphia Eagles
This was a no brainer. The supposed "Dream Team" as they were dubbed by Vince Young has flopped coming out of the gate. They are showing some signs of life lately and can still make a run at 3-4, but with the talent they have in Philly there's no way this team should be under .500 seven games into the season.
Coach of the Year: Tom Coughlin, New York Giants
I know most people are picking Jim Harbaugh and/or Jim Schwartz for this award, and a few Chan Gailey, but I think Coughlin has done the best job. His team has been decimated by injury. The Giants play in the tough NFC East. He is coaching in the pressure cooker that is New York City. No one thought the Giants would be 5-2 right now after that preseason with all the injuries and contract drama, great job Coach Coughlin.
Executive of the Year: Mike Brown, Cincinnati Bengals
For anyone that is a Bengals fan this is a shocker. I never thought I'd see the day when Mike Brown won any kind of award relating to success in football. Right now though he's the executive of the year and is likely the favorite to win the real thing at the end of the year. Look at the draft the Bengals had this year, right now it's looking like the best in the NFL. Also he pulled off one of the most one sided trades ever by trading a washed up Carson Palmer who didn't even play here anymore anyway. What he got in return was a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick that could become a first, but I doubt it will Palmer isn't leading any team to the AFC Championship. Either way most were calling for him to trade Palmer for a 3rd or 4th just to get something. The perfect storm happened and now the future is bright in Cincinnati, finally! (AM I DREAMING!)

To me this isn't even close. I know Minnesota is having a bad year, but Allen has 12.5 sacks which leads the NFL. He also has 3 forced fumbles which I believe also leads the NFL and an interception. He is dominating games this year and he has a chance at the all time single season sack record. He is doing this on a team that has only won two games and his team has trailed a lot which makes it remarkable that he has that many sacks when he hasn't had nearly as many chances as other players due to teams not having to throw the ball against Minnesota.
Offensive Player of the Year: Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions
I give this award to a non QB since they always seem to win the MVP awards. Calvin is having a huge year leading the entire NFL in TD's for any position and 3rd in the NFL in receiving yards. He is basically uncoverable and has almost single handily carried the Detroit Lions offense and made them a playoff contender for the first time in a long time. Calvin has been there for many of the terrible years so I'm happy for him they are finally winning in Detroit.
Coordinator of the Year: Jay Gruden, Cincinnati Bengals
The job Jay has done with a rookie QB and a rookie number one WR is amazing. Also the fact that he did this in his first year with the Bengals, bringing in a new system and not having an off season to implement it during a lock out is unbelievable. Not to mention this is his first coordinator job in the NFL. I don't think Jay is going to be eligible for this award very long as teams will be knocking on his door for head coaching jobs very soon.

The Dolphins are right up there with them, but the Colts are now looking just pathetic. They lost 62-7 on a Sunday Night Game. Have some professional pride. For years people have said the Colts are a 4 win team without Manning. Well those people were wrong, because they'll be lucky if the win two games.
The I Got My Money Now I'm Gonna Suck Award: Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans
I gotta come up with a better name for this award, but you get the picture. It happens all the time in sports, someone gets that big contract and they are terrible afterwards. So congrats Chris Johnson you are that guy. You got your money now your gonna give no effort. I almost could tell this was gonna happen just by the way the guy acts.
The White Guy Cliche Award: High Motor
This year the white guy cliche is when the talking heads talk about white defensive lineman that are good it's they have a high motor or a motor that doesn't quit. Runner up would be talking about any white slot WR as a "Wes Welker Type"
MVP: Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
This guy has it all. He is coming off a Super Bowl win and his team has shown no hangover signs so far starting off 7-0. He has a cool celebration with the whole championship belt thing. I'm sure he has a smoking hot girlfriend or wife as well. If you are Aaron Rodgers life is good.

This year the white guy cliche is when the talking heads talk about white defensive lineman that are good it's they have a high motor or a motor that doesn't quit. Runner up would be talking about any white slot WR as a "Wes Welker Type"

This guy has it all. He is coming off a Super Bowl win and his team has shown no hangover signs so far starting off 7-0. He has a cool celebration with the whole championship belt thing. I'm sure he has a smoking hot girlfriend or wife as well. If you are Aaron Rodgers life is good.
